Cycling - Five Covered Bridges Half-Century Tour
Beginning and Ending at Xenia Station in Xenia
This is a half-century ride that will take you through some of the most rural townships of a predominately rural county…and take you to all five of Greene County’s remaining covered bridges. To #1 Engle Mill Road (12.9 miles)
From Xenia Station (about a mile south of the Greene County Court House on South Detroit Street (U.S. Route 68), go south on Little Miami Scenic Trail to Spring Valley. Turn left on Spring Street. Turn right where Spring Street ends at Main Street. Turn left at the next street, Spring Valley-Paintersville Rd. Stay on Spring Valley-Paintersville Rd. for approximately 3 miles (you will cross route 380). Turn right (south) on Engle Mill Rd. (The bridge is approximately a half mile south.)
To #2 Ballard Road (16.1 miles)
North on Engle Mill Rd. Right on Spring Valley-Paintersville Road until it ends at U.S. Route 68. Right on U.S. 68. Left (almost immediately) on Paintersville-New Jasper Rd. until you come to Jasper Rd. (You will come to the Village of Paintersville. Ignore Bone Rd. and bear to the right.) On the other side of Jasper Rd., Paintersville-New Jasper Rd. becomes New Jasper Station Rd. North on New Jasper Station Rd. until it ends at Old U.S. Route 35. (You will cross Ballard Rd. Ignore it. Ballard is divided by U.S. Route 35.) Left on Old 35 approximately one mile. Left on Ballard Rd. The bridge is approximately one half mile south.
To #3 Charleton Mill (5.8 miles)
Return to Old 35 and turn left. Approximately 1 1/2 miles is a very sharp curve. Right on Nash Rd. (Ignore Federal Rd. which also runs into Old 35 at this point.) to the stop sign at U.S. Route 42. On the other side of U.S. 42, Nash Rd. becomes Charlton Mill Rd. Follow Charlton Mill Rd. to the bridge.
To #4 Stevenson Road (1.8 miles)
Continue on Charlton Mill Rd. until it ends. Left on Wilberforce Clifton Rd. Right onto Jones Rd. to stop sign. Bridge is to the left off Stevenson Rd.
To #5 Grinnell Road (4.8 miles)
North on Stevenson Rd. (straight across from the stop sign on Jones Rd.) until it ends at Clark Run Rd. Left on Clark Run Rd. until it ends at Clifton Rd. Right on Clifton Rd. for approximately two miles. Left on Grinnell Rd. for approximately one mile. After crossing the Little Miami River watch for a pull off for parking on the left. A foot path leads to the bridge.
To Yellow Springs (1.7 miles)
Follow Grinnell Road until it ends. Right on Little Miami Scenic Trail (just before Corry St.) to downtown Yellow Springs. You will pass the parking lot for Glen Helen on the right. Yellow Springs Station is on the bike path past the first traffic light or turn left on Little Miami Scenic
